Dear shippers, we would like to inform you today that, as part of the European climate protection targets, the already known EU ETS surcharge will increase from 2025, as from January the proportion of emissions for which emission allowances must be surrendered will rise from 40% to 70% (100% in 2026). FuelEU Maritime The FuelEU Maritime Regulation aims to promote the use of renewable, low-carbon fuels and clean energy technologies for ships. FuelEU Maritime sets maximum limits for the annual average greenhouse gas intensity of energy consumed by ships (GT > 5000) calling at European ports. The greenhouse gas intensity of fuels used by the shipping sector is to be gradually reduced – by 2% in 2025 and finally by 80% in 2050. As a result, some shipping companies have already announced corresponding surcharges from 01.01.2025. Final amounts and validity dates are expected in the coming weeks.
