An overview for ocean freight

Container Dimensions & Container Types

Choosing the right container is crucial for safe and cost-effective ocean freight. Container size, payload, volume and design determine which goods you can ship and how efficiently you can use the space available.

Container dimensions in detail

The tables below give you an overview of the key container dimensions, weights and volumes of the most common ocean freight containers. Alongside the external and internal dimensions, you will find figures for the door opening, tare weight, maximum payload and cargo volume. All figures are guide values and may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Container types at a glance

Which container you need depends on the type, size and weight of the cargo. Standard containers carry the bulk of the world’s ocean freight, while special containers are designed for goods with particular requirements in terms of height, weight or loading. Here is a quick guide:

  • Dry Container (DC): the classic standard container for dry general cargo and for the majority of all ocean freight shipments.
  • High Cube Container (HC): offers additional internal height compared with a standard container, and therefore more cargo volume on the same footprint.
  • Reefer / Non-Operating Reefer (NOR): an insulated reefer container that can also be used as a dry container without active refrigeration, making it particularly suitable for temperature-sensitive but non-refrigerated cargo.
  • Open Top Container (OT): has a removable roof and can be loaded from above. Ideal for especially tall or bulky goods.
  • Flat Rack Container (Flat): has no fixed side walls and is suitable for heavy-lift cargo as well as over-width or over-length out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo.

Finding the right container

The right container type depends on a number of factors – dimensions, weight, volume and the nature of the cargo. Our SACO experts will help you choose the right container type and advise you on suitable transport solutions for import and export.
