Container types at a glance
Which container you need depends on the type, size and weight of the cargo. Standard containers carry the bulk of the world’s ocean freight, while special containers are designed for goods with particular requirements in terms of height, weight or loading. Here is a quick guide:
- Dry Container (DC): the classic standard container for dry general cargo and for the majority of all ocean freight shipments.
- High Cube Container (HC): offers additional internal height compared with a standard container, and therefore more cargo volume on the same footprint.
- Reefer / Non-Operating Reefer (NOR): an insulated reefer container that can also be used as a dry container without active refrigeration, making it particularly suitable for temperature-sensitive but non-refrigerated cargo.
- Open Top Container (OT): has a removable roof and can be loaded from above. Ideal for especially tall or bulky goods.
- Flat Rack Container (Flat): has no fixed side walls and is suitable for heavy-lift cargo as well as over-width or over-length out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo.
